Biverbanca's origins are 'relatively recent' as it was established in 1994 from the merger between Cassa di Risparmio di Biella (founded in 1856) and Cassa di Risparmio di Vercelli (created in 1851). The new bank, named Cassa di Risparmio di Biella and Vercelli (Biverbanca), currently with 109 branches and 700 employees, inherited the valuable traditions of two ancient local credit institutions which, for over one hundred and fifty years, significantly contributed to the economic and social growth of the Biella and Vercelli districts. In 1997, Banca Commerciale Italiana bought a stake in Biverbanca's capital and in the following two-year period gained control with 55%. On 10 December 1999, Banca Commerciale Italiana and all its affiliates were incorporated into the Intesa Group.
On 20 December 2007 Biverbanca became part of the MPS Group, having Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP) and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) finalised the sale - agreed on 4 June 2007 - to MPS of the 55% Biverbanca stake owned by ISP.
Biverbanca remains deeply committed to its traditional reference territory, with 95% of its branches situated in the two provinces, where it boasts significant market shares, continuing to be the "bank next door" for Biella and Vercelli residents.
